ROLLS & CO., 14 & 15 CONDUIT STREET, LONDON": THE FIRST CATALOGUE TO ADVERTISE THE NEW 'ROLLS-ROYCE' CAR (Jan. 1905) printed in black and red on coated paper, printed card wrapper, 20pp. 51/2"x 41/2". Including illustrations of 11 different models. The firm of C.S. Rolls & Co. had been founded in 1902 as agents for 'Panhard' cars in Britain. The new 'Rolls-Royce' cars were manufactured exclusively for C.S. Rolls & Co., by the engineering firm of Henry Royce of Hulme, Manchester. In 1906 the two firms merged and in 1907 opened a new factory in Derby to manufacture the famous 'Silver Ghost'. A historic and attractive catalogue. Occasional slight smudge with original rusted staples neatly replaced by thread, otherwise good condition. Also included is an example of C.S. Rolls personal bookplate, steel engraved in 1906 and bearing his arms with a view of motor vehicles passing an impressive mansion, above which are flying two air balloons. *** |

Most of the items are partially or completely stuck down but include a piece of fabric with the m/s note "Fabric of A.V.Roe's first triplane to fly", two typed 1910 letters from C. Grahame-White & Co. Ltd. signed by the Manager, Robert W.A. Brewer, with contents such as "we are arranging for passenger flights....at Brooklands on June 18th weather permitting; our minimum fee for such flights is 10 guineas for a short trip....", a 1910 Blackpool Flying Carnival passenger flight ticket with photographs both of the Meeting and of the 1910 Brooklands Race, a series of 1910-12 letters written or typed and signed by A.V.Roe giving advice on flying and how to build an aeroplane incl. a 1912 letter with a sketch by Roe of wing improvements, a few letters from magazine and club editors, a small cut out giving details of the aeroplane built by Mr. Cooper at Charterhouse and a postcard bearing what purports to be but what is almost certainly a forgery of the signature of C. Grahame-White and depicting the said aviator at the Boston-Harvard Aero Meeting in Sept 1910. A splendid record and almost certainly unique. **/*** |

ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPHS OF THE MAJOR LANDSLIP ON THE FOLKESTONE LINE OF THE SOUTH EASTERN & CHATHAM RAILWAY (19 Dec. 1915) twelve plate photographs 9"x 11" and two folding, panoramic photographs 21"x 9", all with the imprint of Ernest Milner, photographer of Wandsworth. Plus, contemporary, detailed, hand coloured map 9"x 11", depicting the area of the landslip and the massive displacement of the line. Superb quality photographs, produced apparently for an official inquiry, depicting the chaotic landscape created by the 2-mile slip along the line between the Martello and Abbotscliff Tunnels. Views include the devastation at the Abbotscliff and Warren Halts and the precarious situation of the 6.15 p.m. train from Ashford to Dover. On six of the photographs, the very detailed fault line has been neatly entered in yellow ink. Also included are two, pre-slip, picture postcards depicting Warren Halt and a train crossing the Warren. (For security reasons during WWI, the news of the disaster was kept out of the press and not revealed until 1919). *** |

(The game which was won 2-0 by Bolton is sometimes known as the 'White Horse' final, after the mounted policeman, who cleared the pitch of spectators before the kick-off.
