The cover is dilapidated and two facing pages have suffered some damage from adhesion. The year before, she had caused a sensation, when she became the first society woman to go on the stage. Designed by Captain Bunnett with coloured illustrations of various Regiments, historic battles etc. the album has 28 pages with slots for photographs. There are 44 subject photographs (family unknown) and one photograph of the Great Wheel (from the Greater Britain Exhibition). The spine is damaged but repairable and the music box key is missing. He carries a sack over his shoulder and is examining a postal stationery card. Similar figures are known in military uniform but they are very scarce. 374 CRICKETING SCRAP ALBUM OF ARTHUR RICH, CAMBRIDGESHIRE COUNTY PLAYER AND COLLEAGUE OF JACK HOBBS AND TOM HAYWARD. CONTAINING A WIDE VARIETY OF CRICKETING EPHEMERA, MOST NOTABLY A PICTORIAL MENU CARD CELEBRATING THE RETURN OF HOBBS FROM HIS TRIUMPHANT 1912 TOUR OF AUSTRALIA, SIGNED BY ALL THREE MEN (1894-1913) The menu was for the complimentary dinner to Jack Hobbs on 23 April 1912, held by the Cambridgeshire Cricket Association "on his return from Australia". It depicts Hobbs' photo portrait on the front cover surrounded by some 30 signatures in pencil and ink, including Hobbs, Hayward and Rich. The album 140pp. 9"x 7" cloth, also contains 13 printed score cards 1891-1906, of which seven are for the Cambridgeshire county team (including four which list Hobbs in the team); a variety of cricketing menu cards and fixture lists of which two depict cricketers; news cuttings reporting matches and some other local non-cricket events. Arthur Rich (1867-1970), former chief clerk of Trinity College, had a playing career of some 30 years, appearing many times for the county side and regularly for the Camden (Cambridge) C.C. and Cambridge University Servants team. Jack Hobbs, who played his first two county games as a 19-year old amateur with Cambridgeshire in August 1901 (one of the score cards is in the album) was the greatest of English pre-war batsman and Tom Hayward, also from Cambridge, headed the batting averages on the first MCC tour of Australia in 1903-1904. *** PHOTO - see plate no. 2 £500
