253 THE "BEAUFORT" COACH HORN, MADE BY KOHLER & SONS, VICTORIA STREET, WESTMINSTER, COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL LEATHER CARRYING CASE (c.1862) brass and copper horn, 35" long , in moulded leather case with straps for attaching to the coach. Impressed on both horn and case with makers' name and representations of the medals presented at the London International Exhibitions of 1851 & 1862. The horn was named after Henry Somerset, 7th Duke of Beaufort (1792-1853), aide-de-camp to the Duke of Wellington and famous coachman. Issued for the charity concert at Hawarden Castle, the North Wales home of W.E. Gladstone, then Chancellor of the Exchequer. Attractive artist-drawn design, depicting a variety of performers, two of whom were Gladstone's wife and daughter. In the course of the war, Gladstone's sympathies shifted from the southern to the northern states. Neatly re-backed with archival tissue. *** £60

Lane had a distinguished military career, serving in the Indian Mutiny, Bhutan Expedition & Afghan Wars. 268 MERGER NEGOTIATIONS BETWEEN THE SOUTH EASTERN RAILWAY AND THE LONDON BRIGHTON & SOUTH COAST RAILWAYS: COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS INCLUDING LETTERS FROM SIR EDWARD WATKIN M.P., ONE OF THE GREATEST AND MOST UNSCRUPULOUS OF VICTORIAN RAILWAY ENTREPRENEURS (1865-1867) comprising: a) manuscript agreement on vellum, 5pp. 18"x 12", bearing the seals of both companies and duty stamps of 10s. and £1.15s., dated 25 June 1867. b) 15 autograph letters signed by Watkin and 3 secretarial letters also signed by Watkin, 15 Dec. 1865 - 7 Feb. 1867, totalling 61pp. c) Agreement signed by the Chairmen of the SER, LB&SCR and the LC&DR, plus a 'Memorandum' signed by Watkin. d) 25 related letters and documents, including a telegram from Watkin and a letter from the L&BSCR accusing him of, "an entire breach of confidence". The collection came from the archives of the LB&SCR and provides a fascinating insight into the abortive negotiations, which constituted a significant episode in Watkins turbulent career. *** £300

Magnificent publication, finely bound in contemporary half morocco with raised bands on the spine, gilt lettering and coat of arms on the front covers. Published two years after his death, by William Mackenzie, Ludgate Hill, London. A comprehensive account of Disraeli's remarkable life as writer and politician. PORTER OF THE 97th REGIMENT, COMMENDED FOR HIS SERVICES AT THE SIEGE OF SEBASTAPOL AND THE FALL OF LUCKNOW, DEPUTY COMMANDER OF THE ENGLISH AMBULANCE IN THE FRANCO PRUSSIAN WAR, LATE ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MILITARY SURGERY AT THE ARMY MEDICAL SCHOOL, PRINCIPAL MEDICAL OFFICER IN CHARGE OF THE KABUL FORCE IN THE AFGHAN WAR AND AUTHOR OF "THE SURGEON'S POCKET BOOK ON THE BEST TREATMENT OF WOUNDED IN WAR" (1850-1880) an important collection of his correspondence, papers, related ephemera and publications. Comprising three volumes: a) Military scrapbook 13"x 8" (1" thick) containing hundreds of items, including official and personal correspondence to him, retained copies of his own letters, military instructions and related documents, telegrams, news cuttings, related ephemera, etc. The contents relate to all aspects of his career from his 'Junior Surgical Prize' award of 1850 to news reports of his death in Afghanistan in 1880. Many items of great interest but particularly noteworthy are the items relating to the English Ambulance in the Franco-Prussian War, financed by the newly formed English Red Cross Society, including official headed letters and a printed 'Red Cross' label for his luggage, en route to Versailles. The binding is loose and split down one hinge. b) Porter's very detailed, manuscript amendments and additions to the text and illustrations of the 1st. edition of "The Surgeon's Pocket Book", which had been published in 1875. Contained in a volume of some 260pp. 11"x 8" finely bound in half calf and marbled boards and including original artwork for illustrations. The second edition, of which this is the original manuscript, was published in 1880. c) "The Surgeon's Pocket Book" (2nd edn. 1880), 319pp. 51/2"x 41/2", as published, re-cased with linen spine and original morocco boards. **/*** PHOTO - see plate no. 3 £1000
281 THE FIRST BRITISH POSTCARD, POSTALLY USED ON FIRST DAY OF ISSUE (1 Oct. 1870) the larger (and scarcer) of the two cards issued, 31/2"x 41/2" ('court' size) with printed 1/2d. lilac stamp. Postmarked s.r. 'London S.W.' Oc 1 70. with receipt pmk. of Folkestone on the reverse, dated the following day. Autograph signed message by Dr. Thomas Guy, Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals, who was director of the English Red Cross Ambulance in the Franco-Prussian War, expressing a desire to see Surgeon Porter of the 97th Regt. at Shorncliffe Camp (Folkestone), "relative to arrangements". Message is dated 1st. Oct. 1870. Both men were shortly to depart for the war zone. (Background information is included. Also see related lot of Surgeon Porter's papers). 286 BRITISH PASSPORT ISSUED DURING THE FRANCO-PRUSSIAN WAR, BEARING VISA HANDSTAMPS OF BOTH SIDES IN THE CONFLICT, APPLIED IN LONDON, BY THE CONSUL GENERAL OF FRANCE AND THE CONSUL GENERAL OF THE 'NORD DEUTSCHE BUND', OF WHICH PRUSSIA WAS A MEMBER (15-16 Nov. 1870) engraved document 14"x 11" with manuscript inserts, bearing the royal arms and those of the foreign secretary, Viscount Granville. Signed by the holder, John Bertram, who intended travelling on the Continent. At this date, Paris was under siege by the Prussian Army. *** £40

300 UNCUT SHEET OF 'CARTES DE VISITE' PHOTOGRAPHS (1870's) unmounted, plate photograph 8"x 11", bearing eight different, cameo portraits each 31/2"x 21/2". The striking images are of women of various ethnic groups from North and Sub-Saharan Africa. No imprint but probably by a photographer based in Egypt or Algeria. All 'carte de visite' photographs originated from a multiple sheet such as this but the survival of an 'uncut' example is unusual.
