In most cases, the text is printed on the front page only, with Hill's name at the foot. Each leaflet contains instructions on just one aspect of P.O. business and many bear a printed notice on the back, instructing postmasters to preserve the circulars in the portfolio supplied. Subjects include rates of postage, details of mail packet boats, procedures for handling mail, late fees, prepayment of letters, newspaper post, appointment of PMG, British Postal Guide, etc. *** £150

234 PATENT FOR MAKING BOOTS, 1859: Two large printed vellum sheets granting to Charles Southall of Leeds a patent for ''An improved apparatus for making and finishing boots and shoes'' complete with magnificent, elaborately gothic 61/2'' wax seal of Queen Victoria (small damage to one side) contained in original japanned tin box; also a large bronze medal awarded to Southall at the 1865 Dublin Exhibition, an 1872 provisional patent for an improvement to the machine, an 1877 US patent with illustrated specification and a company advertising leaflet c1890. Additionally, an attractive (1882) printed vellum patent grant for improved window-cleaning machinery, with £5 Patent fiscal and paper seal. All contained in original (scuffed) leather-covered box embossed with the Royal Arms and ''Hughes & Bloodworth/Patent Agents/17 Cross Street/Manchester''. Rarely offered material! **/*** £150
235 "THE ROSE VALENTINE: A SOUVENIR OF LOVE" AND SIMILAR 'ROSE' AND 'GRUSS AUS' NOVELTIES (1850''s - 1890's) four examples: a) 'Rose Valentine' lace paper card, containing a 'cobweb rose' in the shape of a closed fan, which opens into a double-sided circle, 9" diameter, each segment of which carries a different verse and pictorial vignette of Cupid. The delicate 'cobweb' is damaged but the card and folding circle are in good order. A delightful and very rare form of Valentine printed by Rock Bros & Payne, London, dated 1859. b) Novelty 'rose', opening to 10" diameter, depicting views of Wiesbaden and nearby areas of the Rhineland, printed by C. Adler, Hamburg (c.1860). c) Novelty 'rose', opening to 10" diameter, depicting views of Switzerland. Given to Emma Sharpe as a reward for good conduct (c.1860). d) "Gruss aus Leipzig" (c.1890) die-cut booklet of chromo lithographed, postcard-like vignette views of the city and locality, containing 8 free-form pages with card covers in the style of an ostrich-feather fan 7"x 41/2". (19th century) collection of eight different examples by various manufacturers, all with wooden handles and brass or gun-metal, spiked 'wheels', approximately 6" long. In the early days of postage stamp production, rouletting was employed by a variety of postal administrations to facilitate (albeit somewhat crudely) the separation of stamps.
