Published by C. Smith, Strand, London. Detailed, hand coloured map, scale 2·33 miles to 1", dissected on linen and folding into original slip case. Distinguishing turnpike roads, many individual houses and listing 12 inns, "which supply post horses & carriages". (In 1799, William Wordsworth had bought Dove Cottage, Grasmere, where he lived until moving to the nearby Allan Bank in 1808 and in 1810 to the Parsonage, Grasmere, In 1813, he moved to Rydal Mount, overlooking Rydal Water, where he remained until his death in 1850). Of additional interest is the journey of a contemporary visitor ("A.H.B."), travelling from Kendal to Carlisle, via several of the lakes including Grasmere and including a boat trip along Ullswater, the route of which is neatly entered on the map, in Indian ink. Headed "Private", no postmarks but likely to have been carried as officially 'franked' mail (the signature and seal being sufficient authorisation). Freeling (1764-1836) was a prominent figure in London literary and cultural circles and the friend was probably one of the caricaturist, Cruikshank brothers, George or Robert.
