2672 RARE LETTER REGARDING THE PROPOSED TELEGRAPH LINE FROM KHARTOUM TO PRETORIA: 1879 (18 Jan.) letter (no env.) from J.A. Grant to Carl Geigler, Director of Sudan & Red Sea Posts and Telegraphs, regarding a proposed overland cable from Cape to Cairo extending the end of the telegraph line at Khartoum via. Gondohoro, M'tessa's (Uganda) through Livingstonia, Tete and Shoshong to Pretoria. This letter was written 4 days before the battle of Isandhlwana which led to a chain of events that hastened telegraphic communication between London and the Cape. An important historical document. £240
2673 A RARE LETTER OF HISTORICAL INTEREST: 1879 (19 July) env. from J.A. Grant in London to Guigler Pacha, Khartoum. The interesting contents commence with "Since writing you in January the S. African war has settled the question of Telegraphic communication with the Cape". The letter also mentions Dr. Kirk (who was botanist and Medical Officer to Livingstone's Expedition to the Zambesi in 1858 -63), the Prince Imperial (killed in the Zulu War), Stanley, Speke (on whose second expedition Grant went), Mteza of Uganda, and the remarkable Major A.A. de Serpa Pinto who in 1877 had travelled from London via Victoria Falls through the Kalahari and Khama's country to the Transvaal.
