2411 EXPERIMENTAL MACHINE CANCELLATIONS - "MR VAILE'S STAMPING MACHINE": Unstamped c. March/April 1878 envelope (hand-written address; "A.Websel Esq, Karangeahape Road, Auckland, New Zealand") with a superb strike of the two-bar type Vaile continuous machine cancellation - the c.d.s. dated "NZ/AUCKLAND/SE 2/74" in addition to albino impressions of three horizontal bars towards the bottom of the cover. A similar cover with a three bar strike of the Vaile continuous machine cancellation realised £2,600 in the Cavendish auction of 31 May 2000. The cover is accompanied by a photocopy of an article on Vaile’s stamping machine by Maurice Barette, entitled “An abortive slogan of one hundred years ago” which appeared in November 1982 (London Postal History Group notebook). Note: Due to the Italian intervention in Ethiopia, all mail to senior personnel in S.Africa was diverted to surface mail to avoid any possibility of it falling into Italian hands. Also 1935 O.H.M.S. env. to Cairo with m/s "By Air Mail" crossed out in pencil and overstamped in red ink with "BY BRITISH PACKET ONLY" again diverted to surface mail in response to events in Ethiopia. Presumably flown by Hamel on the 18th (arrival b.s. of 19th September on reverse). A little foxed. £120
2441 SCARLET ENVELOPE ADDRESSED TO THE ROYAL TRAVEL AGENT ON THE ROYAL YACHT VICTORIA AND ALBERT: A scarlet env. franked with a lightly used 1d, headed "Special Service" and addressed to L.Fehr Esq., HMY Victoria and Albert.
