'Caucasian' in Batoum to his wife, added to between 10th-22nd December, 1905 with much detail about the local situation: ''in about a fortnight's time they expect a revolution here...last night there was between 20 or 30 men shot on the streets..the revolutionary gang have ordered a general strike. When I went on deck there was a party of the Revolutionaries bearing a white flag but armed to the teeth...they had come to demand all the firearms on board...there is an indescribable feeling of suppressed excitement. All the streets have been barricaded to stop the cavalry charges. The mob are all well armed, plenty of ammunition and dynamite bombs...'' A rare eye-witness account. Fine, no envelope. |
