653 S.O.E./BRITISH SPIES, ETC.: Boxfile containing a fascinating accumulation of SOE related material inc. sundry ephemera relating to the Greyhound/Woodchuck escape circuit including dramatic 1944 (24 May) report by "Antoine" recounting the arrest of "Woodchuck II" and the need to close the escape line, complaints from escapees of problems they had encountered on the circuit, sundry messages from "Antoine" immediately prior to the relief of Paris and much more. An absolutely absorbing lot which gives us a great insight to the perils of being a British agent in Occupied France. (Qty.). £150
654 THE WHITEHEAD STORY: The fascinating collection of covers, letters, photographs, etc. relating to George Whitehead and his time in the RAF & the SOE between 1940 & 1946. The story begins in 1940 with Whitehead returning to the UK from the United States on board S.S. "Manhattan" and continues with him joining the Polish Squadron of Fighter Command at RAF Stannington where he acted as interpreter, before taking up work as an organising officer for the SOE (base in London). He was parachuted into the Ardennes in July & August 1944 and again in April 1945. Amongst the wealth of fascinating material in this extremely interesting lot is a request from the French Ministry of Justice at St. Quentin to send them details of what Whitehead could tell them about German War Crimes in the Ardennes, particularly regarding a Colonel Grabowski & his group, 1946 Citation for the Croix de Guerre awarded to Whitehead for his work in the Ardennes, 1946 letter from the War Office informing Whitehead that he had been awarded the George Cross, 1946 letter informing him that he had been awarded the Polish Gold Cross of Memory with Cross Swords, 1948 invitation from the Mayor of Revin to attend the unveiling of a monument to the memory of 106 young Maquis fighters who were betrayed by a collaborator and massacred in their secret camp, and much more. The lot also includes various items relating to his brother Alfred's equally eventful War-time experiences and a small section of non-Whitehead related material focusing on Bletchley Park and the SIS "Enigma" code breaking.
