Brown: Group of FPO covers, 1940-41 illustrating the movement of this soldier from MEF (Palestine) to Egypt & Crete, where he was taken prisoner; envs. are addressed to his wife except for an August 1941 item returned to her with 'Addressee Reported/Prisoner of War' & G.H.Q. 02F. Brown from her husband, interned by the Germans after the Battle for Crete; his address has been obliterated by the censor and replaced with 'F No. 46234' feldpost reference. 467 CRETE - Platanias Camp: A second item from the same correspondence with Cpl. Brown's address given as 'KGf. No.5023, Prisoner of War Camp, Crete'; the front of the env. has a s/l 'Kriegsgefangenenpost' h.s. in red. Censor tapes from Berlin & UK. A scarce item. £240
468 CRETE - Platanias Camp: Another envelope addressed to Mrs Brown with 'Prisoner of War Camp, Crete' endorsement and fine strike in red of 'rt: Kriegsgefangenen Lager/ Kreta (VI)' ; German censor tape removed, British PC 90 label still attached. A rare handstamp. PHOTO - see plate no. 17 £240
469 CRETE - Platanias Camp: A further item from the Brown correspondence: a German feldpost card with dumb c.d.s. for 16.10.41 and fine strike of the Camp censor cachet 'Stalag VIIIB', the message informs Mrs Brown ''Please do not write to me until you hear from me again as I am at present only in a transit camp'' . Fine. £200
470 CRETE - Platanias Camp: Scarce usage of a German feldpost card by a POW: a further item (3.8.41) from the Brown correspondence addressed from 'Prisoner of War Transit Camp, CRETE' with a feldpost c.d.s., German censor h.s. & British crowned 'PASSED/P.W.4983' h.s. in red. 471 CRETE - Platanias Camp: Red Cross 'Kriegsgefangenenpost' front (with back detached) addressed to Cpl. Brown at Feldpost No. 46234 - the number obliterated; unusual boxed 'PRISONNIER DE GUERRE PARIS/ Adresse Inexacte/Retour à l'envoyeur' cachet alongside another 'undeliverable' cachet of the Geneva Red Cross. The photographs contained inside were returned, the letter was not - a small type-written slip declares : 'Die Zensur wurde von einer/ fremden Macht vorgenommen./ Die Auslandbriefprüfstelle'. 472 CRETE - Platanias Camp: 13.7.41 Letter enclosed in a large env. with red 'Kriegsgefangenenpost' h.s. and feldpost c.d.s. of 23.8.41, addressed to Mrs Brown at Cheltenham; Berlin & UK censor tapes. In his letter, Cpl. Brown mentions rumours that they will be released, asks for a German dictionary and records conditions in the Camp. PHOTO - see plate no. 17 £200
473 CRETE - Platanias Camp: 30.8.41 A similar letter enclosed in a large env. with feldpost c.d.s. (5.9.41) and a red 'Briefstempel/F.P.Nr. 12749' h.s.; also a crude 'ZENSIERT/GEFANGENEN/LAGER' h.s. (apparently made out of rubber for the Camp by Cpl. Brown himself !) struck in red on the front & back of the cover; UK censor tape. Folds but scarce. PHOTO - see plate no. 17 £240
474 CRETE - Platanias Camp: 24.10.41 Envelope addressed to the Camp - the only letter to get through to Cpl.Brown - with UK & Munich censor tapes; Brown escaped on 29 Dec., carrying the envelope with him until his eventual rescue by HMS 'Hedgehog'. Also two Red Cross letters to Mrs Brown concerning contact with her husband and an air-letter of 29 Dec.1942 from Sgt. Brown posted from FPO 550 (Palestine). Complete with notes on the story of his escape. (4 items). £150

Also a group of 1942-43 Air Letters to his wife from MEF FPOs, a redirected & returned Air Letter addressed to him and a 1945 BAOR typewritten movement order referring to Lieutenant R.F.Brown, Royal Signals. 480 CRETE - British POW: Two very fine 'Kriegsgefangenenpost' items from Stalag XVIIIA (Wolfsberg) sent to Worcester by Gunner L.W.Whiteman, captured by the Germans in Crete; both have dumb c.d.s. and show two different Camp censor marks. Also a series of photocopies of photographs taken during his imprisonment and sent as postcards to his family plus two letters from Mr Whiteman explaining the background. A fascinating glimpse of Camp existence. (2 items & 9 copies). £100
