UNION SOLDIERS' CORRESPONDENCE, 1863-64: A rare group of letters, some with original envelopes, written by two New York brothers serving in the Union Army, to their grandparents and younger brother; the correspondence shows them sending home souvenirs and their pay arrears, to save for some land and their movements from Fortress Monroe where ''in the Roads there are some of Burnside's old men..60,000 of them are going to Newport'' - to Fort McGruder - ''I am aroused by the cries of the men who having had some mouldy hard bread and raw pork for the last day are pig sick at a sight...of some more'' and where they were able to visit the war-ravaged Williamsburg, hearing that ''Hooker has been whipped at Chancellorsville'' and''Dick Homan has a ball and chain to his leg for the next 3 years for deserting'' , to Dismal Swamp, Va., York Town, to a 'Camp in the Field' where ''we have passed a week of terrible and weary days...fighting every day...the din and confusion of battle is fearful'' and finally the battlefield of Cold Harbor where they were killed together, as witnessed in a typescript copy of a Sergeant's eye-witness account. Original photographs of both men in uniform and a camp pass are included with this remarkable lot, as are a detailed sketch of the interior of their tent complete with the two men themselves, a copy photograph of the grandparents' house and other items of family correspondence.
