1052 THE 'THOMAS DUNCOMBE' ANTI-GRAHAM PRINTED ENVELOPE; 2nd July 1844 usage of this remarkable envelope (vertical creases clear of stamp do not detract) from 'BUNGAY' to Ipswich with 31/2 margin 1d Red tied by v. fine '147' numeral, having bold inscription printed on the front; 'If this letter be OPENED/at the General Post Office, the/writer will be glad to have it/forwarded the same day .'!! Only one other example of this envelope (see Bodily/Jarvis/Hahn, p.160; different print-setting) has been recorded that was used by Thomas Duncombe MP (from Diss on 28th July 1844; they may have been produced for his own use) as a protest against the revelations about the P.O.'s Secret Office tampering with mail in transit. Mansfield, TROWBRIDGE, Wiltshire' with additional printed inscription at top; 'To Postmasters:/ An immediate answer to this letter expected: Any delay will be enquired into. ' Presumably this envelope was produced as a direct result of the Anti-Graham campaign and the attendant revelations about the detaining and opening of mail in the P.O.'s Secret Office.
