172 WARREN EXPEDITION - UNDERPAID INGOING COVER FROM SCOTLAND: Attractive 1884 (2 Dec.) env. from 'Balcaskie' to ''Lt. Ralph W. Armstrong, Telegraph Section, Royal Engineers, Bechuanaland, Sth. Africa'' , franked by 1d lilacs (3) tied by Pittenweem duplexes. On arrival the letter was charged with a handstruck ''3d'' mark but this was cancelled by the Cape Town Inspector's ''1'' in oval diamond and the final ''9d'' charge added in m/s. Very fine and rare thus. A similar cover sold in the H.R.Holmes auction in Oct.1981for £800. Exhibition quality. [Ex Willcocks]. PHOTO - see plate no. 9 £500
