145 'SHIP LETTER/(crown)/SYDNEY' C.D.S.'s IN RED & IN BLACK ON EARLY COVER FROM NEW ZEALAND TO LONDON; Attractive Jan. 1841 EL (part NZ Missionary Report from Mangungu; inc. report of the drowning of the first Wesleyan missionary to die in N.Z.) from Mangungu (N.Z.) to London, sent via N.S.W. and so with BLACK 'SHIP LETTER/(crown)/SYDNEY' c.d.s. on the flap (struck on arrival from N.Z.) and v. fine strike of the same mark BUT STRUCK IN RED on the front (struck on payment of '1/3' postage, by the sender's Sydney Agent). Remarkable and attractive combination of marks. Charged '1/4' in London with that port's 'SHIP LETTER' mark also on the flap. PHOTO - see plate no. 4 £150

(the first) of the separate Tasmanian Wesleyan Missionary 'District' with good details of schools etc.; both have cancelled red m/s '4' rates and '1/-' arrival charges as well as fine to very fine BLUE boxed 'INDIA LETTER/EASTBOURNE' marks (Rob.In.1; rare colour) on the flaps and London 5th June 1837 arrival marks. 158 'PORT ARTHUR [CONVICT] STATION' SCHOOL/MISSIONARY REPORT; 30th Sept. 1841 EL containing an interesting Wesleyan Missionary report on the school for prisoners at the 'Port Arthur Station', sent to London having a mostly fine large red oval Hobart d.s. on the front, endorsed 'Per Thetis' with a mostly fine black London 'SHIP LETTER' on the flap. The contents concern the difficulties of the few convicts who wish to improve themselves due to the 'restrictions of a penal settlement and [their being] surrounded by eight or nine hundred wretched men, abandoned to the most revolting crimes', with details of the Day/Evening/Sabbath convict schools.
