THE VERY RARE EARLY PENNY POST BLACK "GP" MARK ; 23rd Aug. 1785 E (presumably from overseas - probably U.S. - being posted on 13th Oct.) addressed to "Ave Maria Lane, No.5", but readdressed to "St Ann's, Limehouse, near London" (presumably redirected by the person who had carried it privately to London) and posted for the first time in the General Post window (hence the "13/OC" Bishop Mark on the flap), and so transferred to the Penny Post with an indistinct 2-ring "O'CLOCK" mark on the flap in a distinctively chalky-black ink which matches the fine "GP" (Jay L1420; only two examples known) on the front. RARE FREE LETTER SENT LOCALLY BY THE "Penny-Poft-Office" WITHIN LONDON ; 6th Nov. 1790 EL (closed seal hole clear of text) sent from the "Penny-Poft-Office, Weftminfter" to a firm at "No.5 Pump Court, Temple", signed "A. Mackenzie" inside, without postal marks but signed on the address panel ("W. L...") for free postage (very rare thus for an early local London letter). The contents are a printed advice of Penny Post Offices' locations, regulations, etc.; it seems that this may have been the wrapper for a returned local London letter. Of particular interest is the note "The Triangular Stamp on all Penny-Poft letters shews the day they are brought to one of these Principal Offices, and the round Stamp the Hour they are given to the Letter Carriers ". Rare official P.O. description of early postmarks. PHOTO ABOVE. |
