2284 |
THE ONLY EVIDENCE OF THE STARTING DATE OF THE ORIGINAL DOCKWRA POST - THE MARCH 1680 "SMITH'S CURRANT INTELLIGENCE" NEWSPAPER; Very fine 27th/30th March [1680] complete 1-sheet edition of this anti-Catholic newspaper (ragged left hand edge - ex binding - does not affect text; album-page size) with important editorial comment revealing that the new Dockwra/Murray/Chamberlen London Local Penny Post had started the previous Saturday, i.e. on 20th March 1680:- "On Saturday last the Projectors for Conveying Letters to any part of the City, or Suburb, for a peny the Letter, opened their offices, whereof the three chiefest are in Lime-street, about Charing-Crofs, and Temple-bar : besides several inferior Offices; at which they have hung out Tables to advertise people of the thing: but the Porters (not without good reason) supposing that it will be a great diminution. if not the absolute ruin of their imployment, have shewed their resentment thereof by taking down, and tearing the said tables wheresoever they meet with them."s Clearly the new Penny Post met with some opposition; this newspaper reference is the only record discovered giving the start of the very first scheme , under the three original "Projectors", William Dockwra, Robert Murray and Dr. Hugh Chamberlen. Letters carried by this first scheme had no postmarks, but two (18th May & 11th June 1680) are known (in the archives) endorsed "penny letter house pd". This newspaper (and the next lot) are thus very rare items associated with the first scheme . The first example of this notice and paper that we have seen. PHOTO - see plate no. 18 |

VERY EARLY (March 1680) ANTI-DOCKWRA's POST EDITORIAL NEWSPAPER COMMENT; Similar fine 23rd/27th March [1680] complete 1-sheet issue of the anti-Catholic "SMITH's Currant Intelligence" newspaper (album-page size) with front page criticism of "The Project for carrying and re-carrying of Letters from place to place throughout all the Cities of London and Weftminfter", branding it (the scheme only opened on 20th March; see previous lot) as "a farther branch of the Popish Plot", and warning that it threatened the livelihoods of "the poor Porters" who had previously carried local London letters for 1d (or more) on an ad hoc basis. Rare documentary evidence of the problems of the Opening of the First Dockwra Post. PHOTO - see plate no. 18 |
