THE 1674 ESSEX/POST.GOES/ AND:COMS:/EVERY·/DAY:" SLOGAN COVER;

25th January 1674 E (one flap with faults and stains but well clear of marks), almost certainly from St. Osyth, the coastal village near Colchester in Essex (see identical handwriting on included photocopy of 1675 letter from St. Osyth from the same correspondence), attractively addressed; "These For Mr. Thomas Leman att Sr. Robert Clayton's howse in the Old Jurey in London ". There is a manuscript "2"(d) charge below the address (as well as a c.1920 handstruck "CLAYTON MSS" defunct archives mark that is folded below the address without affecting any text or the m/s "2" charge), and a near fine London arrival "IA/25" Bishop Mark on the left hand flap. Nicely placed on the right hand flap is an excellent strike (crossed by filing fold) of the Very Rare encircled "ESSEX/POST. GOES/AND: COMS :/EVERY· /DAY:" Slogan Marking (Jay L62). This is the earliest recorded strike of the ESSEX SLOGAN mark and one of only three examples in private hands; these marks and the similar 1661-3 Kent Slogan marks were used to advertise the regular postal communications with these two counties, but they seem to have been very little used. We can trace no example of these Slogan marks being sold at auction for the last 12 years. The few recorded examples of this mark are all dated between 25th Jan. 1674 (this cover) and 28th Feb. 1675. They are in fact somewhat rarer than Original Dockwra covers. PHOTO - ABOVE. Provenance:- R.L. 5th Oct. 1955 auction; ex Colonel Guy Crouch. |

"2/Off" - FIRST YEAR USAGE OF THE FIRST TYPE RECEIVING HOUSE MARK ; 29th Nov. 1670 EL (long and intriguing contents inc. reference to French plans to attack the Dutch the next spring) franked from London to "the Earle of Bathe at his house at Stow. Leave this at the post-house at Exeter", endorsed "Franc" (early use of this form of free mail endorsement) on the front, and having a near fine Bishop Mark and remarkably very fine strike of the rare "2/Off " mark (Jay L65a) nicely placed on the top flap. These first London Receiving "Off[ice]" marks are recorded from 1670-4 only. Exhibition quality. PHOTO - see plate no. 9 |

THE MYSTERIOUS "3" IN CIRCLE MARK - POSSIBLY RELATED TO THE CHICHESTER ROAD & THE "HOT CROSS BUN" MARKS; 9th May 1688 E from "Capt. Colles" (town unknown; possibly ex the port of Chichester), charged "2"(d) for a journey TO LONDON ("To Sr. Robt. Clayton in the ould Juery, present, London") of up to 80 miles (Chichester was measured at 63 miles from London), with a fine strike of the rare "3" in circle mark (Jay L67; but this example cannot be a London R.H. mark ) on the lower flap. The only other strike of this mark that we have recorded (ex Dove, "Pepys" & "Traudl") was dated 5th Nov. 1689 and was likewise on an INGOING LETTER TO LONDON charged "2"(d):- see Cavendish's Nov. 1996 auction, lot373. Both these examples indicate that this mark was NOT used in London, so could Tayer have introduced a series of numbered handstamps; the "I" in circle is already recorded, 1686/7, while these two "3" marks are 1688/9 and the "4" in circle (Jay L67a) of which we have yet to see an example, is recorded 1687-9 Whatever this mark is, it is very rare! EARLY RED WAX LONDON "INLAND POST OFFICE/(crown)" INSPECTOR'S SEAL ON COVER FROM INDIA/GRENADA() TO ORKNEY; 15th Oct. 1777 EL from "Fort St. George" (location unclear, but could be Grenada, or perhaps India - contents refer to India at one point) addressed to the Orkney Isles; but sent by private means to London and posted there with "WxA" in circle Receiver's mark (William Arthur of Poland St.) and two partial "21/MR" Bishop Marks. One of the Bishop Marks is apparently beneath a superb red wax impression of an oval P.O. seal that we have not seen before, inscribed "INLAND POST OFICE/(crown)". It seems that the letter was found to have had its seal broken when it had been postmarked in the P.O.'s inland office before forwarding to Scotland, so an Inspector re-sealed it. Very attractive and rare thus. The Inspector did not notice the letter's overseas origin, because the postal charge was only "1N" (=1/-) for the two sheets to Edinburgh (double 6d), to which was later added a further "8" (double 4d) on to Orkney.
