THE IVAN EDMONDSON COLLECTION OF IRISH RAILWAY LETTER STAMPS.
| The following 80 lots comprise the collection of Irish Railway letter stamps formed by Ivan Edmondson which has been exhibited on several occasions. The study of Irish Railways has always been difficult and covers are particularly scarce. The majority of the surviving examples are of a philatelic nature and any collection would be impossible to complete without them. The collection offered below is without doubt one of the finest to be offered for many years due to its completeness and quality. |

THE VERY RARE KINGSTON "PAID/TO/ENGLAND" IN CIRCLE - THE COVER ILLUSTRATED IN FOSTER's HANDBOOK; Fine 7th April 1811 Entire from "Jamaica", addressed to Rothschild's in London "post paid P. Pkt. Q.D.C." and rated "4/-" in red, having a fair large "JAMAICA" fleuron ("17 MAY") on the lower flap, with both the red London tombstone "PAID" d.s. (5th July) and a lovely strike of this very large claret "PAID/TO/ENGLAND" in circle mark nicely placed on the front. We are only aware of two other examples of this spectacular mark used in Jamaica (single examples of similar marks used in St. Kitts & Turks are recorded); one dated Dec. 1810 noted by Foster and the faint example sold in Cavendish's "Swarbrick" auction in Sept. 1995 for £880. This is thought to be the finest known example; this cover is illustrated by Foster ("JAMAICA, THE POSTAL HISTORY", 1968, p.167) and a very much enlarged framed photograph of it was hung in the RL auction room for over 10 years! An Important, Famous and most attractive Exhibition item. [Ex C.E. Patrick & Martin Willcocks.] PHOTO INSIDE FRONT COVER |
