856 EXPERIMENTAL MACHINE CANCELLATIONS - "MR VAILE'S STAMPING MACHINE" - 1877/78 TRIAL _D POSTCARD WITH THE EXPERIMENTAL ZIG-ZAG CONTINUOUS MACHINE CANCELLATION: A remarkable unaddressed c. March/April 1878 usage of the GB. _d brown 1875 Postcard cancelled with a very fine Robert Vaile "C/N.Z./AUCKLAND/SE 2/74" continuous zig-zag machine cancellation. This cancellation, although dated "[18]74", was not patented in New Zealand until 1877 (22 Jan.), and the London P.O. demonstration took place in early 1878. This card is almost identical to the two examples in P.O. Archives (see M. Barette's Nov. 1982 London P.H. Group Notebook article; copy included with this lot), and an early 1878 date would be likely; the _d brown postcard came into use on 1st. Feb. 1875 and was phased out from 1st. Jan. 1878 when the next design appeared. Unique in private hands as far as we are aware, and an important addition to the story of Early Machine Cancellations in G.B. and New Zealand. Exhibition quality. Clearly Vaile had failed to impress the N.Z. authorities with his invention (N.Z. P.O. archives of the period are thought to have been accidentally burned during the last century), and he came to England in 1878 to sell the machine to the P.O. here. The London P.O. arranged for a trial on "dummy" mail (such as this card and the cover in the next lot) and rejected the idea; see the Barette article. This design was well ahead of its time, but then Mr Vaile vanishes from the record. PHOTO – INSIDE FRONT COVER £1200
857 EXPERIMENTAL MACHINE CANCELLATIONS - "MR VAILE'S STAMPING MACHINE - THE MATCHING "DUMMY" COVER TO THE PREVIOUS LOT: Unstamped c. March/April 1878 envelope (hand-written address; "r. Barney Esqr., 211 Edgware Road, London") with albino impressions of the "Zig-Zag" machine cancellation in addition to a superb strike of the second type Vaile continuous machine - the c.d.s. "c/N.Z./AUCKLAND/se 2/74" design - also illustrated by Barette (see previous lot details), and which at least one example exists in P.O. Archives. The contents of the envelope were still sealed inside, and we opened it to find the neatly cut and folded random cuttings of a 22nd Sept 1877 London newspaper ("[The Free] Press") which are still indented with the zig-zag machine impressions, proving the trial took place after that date and almost certainly in London (presumably in March/April 1878 at the London P.O.). This cover was clearly also a "Dummy" Trial like the previous lot, made for the London P.O. Experimental demonstration, and is the only example of this design in private hands as far as we are aware. Exhibition quality. PHOTO - see plate no. 2 £1000

871 SAILOR's 1d CONCESSION RATE COVER WITH "FALMOUTH/1d/PAID" MARK CONTAINING A SUPERB HAND-PAINTED WATERCOLOUR PAINTING OF FIRING SAILING SHIPS; 11th February 1837 EL (originally all one sheet in accordance with Concession Rates rules, but subsequently the two halves - letter & painting - were separated for framing) posted from Lisbon to Portsmouth, headed & countersigned for the 1d Concession Rate for "William Bargent, Seaman on bord (sic) of H.M.S. Pembroke with a mostly very fine strike of the very rare red "FALMOUTH/1d/PAID" mark (Willcocks CO401, recorded 1837-42) on the front. This 1d PAID mark is a major rarity in itself; Cavendish have sold examples for £805 on two occasions (27/9/1996, lot 986 & 6/12/1997, lot719). The letter reveals that the writer had obtained the enclosed painting from a sailor on H.M.S. President, and he says "I hope you will have this in a glass [=frame] to take care of it". The painting depicts three British ships of the line firing their guns at marker buoys. For a full transcript and colour illustrations, see "The Cavendish Chronicle" of Feb,. 2000, pp.6-7. A truly superb Exhibition item. [Ex Willcocks.] PHOTO – INSIDE BACK COVER £1500
