THE HARRY PARSONS COLLECTION OF MAIL CARRIED BY THE ROYAL MAIL STEAM PACKET COMPANY
1 January 1842 to 31 December 1879
The following 67 lots are a specialised study of the conveyance of Packet Mail by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company in the Caribbean, between Europe the Caribbean, Northern South America, Central America, the Gulf of Mexico, USA and the Pacific.
The Company’s first Steam Packet sailed on 1st January 1842 from Falmouth, the “Post Port” responsible for the dispatch and receipt of overseas mail; Southampton took over in September 1843 and incoming mail was landed at Plymouth from October 1867. The port of Chagres on the eastern coast of the Isthmus of Panama was used until the railway linking Panama to Colon was opened on 27 January 1855, when Colon became the Company’s terminal for connections with the Pacific.
A close liaison was maintained with other shipping companies trading in the Caribbean and Pacific, especially with the Panama, New Zealand Australian Royal Mail Company operating from Panama to Sydney via. Wellington from 2 June 1866 until 28 January 1869.
The recently published book “Early Routings of The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company 1842-1879 by Phil J. Kenton and Harry G. Parsons (available from The Postal History Society) gives a detailed account of the service.
