MILITARY - WAR OF THE AUSTRIAN SUCCESSION - "ARM:DE FLANDRE " MARK ON COVER TO BONNIE PRINCE CHARLIE'S RIGHT HAND MAN ; Fine 10th May 1746 EL headed from "Camp de Perck" (probably in the Antwerp/Brussels area) with a very fine French Army "ARM:DE FLANDRE" mark (light fold through the colon) nicely placed on the front, addressed to "M. Warren" in Paris. The letter thanks the addressee for sending greetings from "le Roy" [who was Bonnie Prince Charlie, the Young Pretender]. Sir Richard Warren (c.1705-75) was an Irish Jacobite colonel under the Prince; the Young Pretender sent him to seek help from the French court a few weeks prior to the date of this letter. A few months later Warren was the man who rescued the Young Pretender from the highlands. The "ARM:DE FLANDRE" mark is very rare, and the Scottish historical connections of this letter make it doubly important. Exhibition quality. [Ex Martin Willcocks.] PHOTO ABOVE. |

Similar 29th April 1754 EL from "Bergues" (near Calais) addressed to Colonel Warren "a Cassel en Flandres", with a very fine scarce "DE·BERGUE" nicely placed on the front. The contents are headed "Dear Colonel", but throughout they speak directly to "your Majesty"; it was Martin Willcocks's view that this letter was actually intended for Bonnie Prince Charlie himself, and the contents certainly seem to relate to royal finance! Historical letter. [Ex Willcocks.] PHOTO ABOVE. |

MILITARY - SOLDIER'S CONCESSION RATE COVER FROM INDIA TO CANADA, REDIRECTED TO IRELAND; Remarkable 11th Aug. 1844 EL (some reinforced folds, Victorian brown tape just affecting edges of address panel, and inner sheet separated) from "Station Umballah", addressed to the writer's brother in "St. John's, New Brunswick, North America ", headed and countersigned as a "Soldier's Letter " from a Sergt. J. Callaghan, endorsed "via Bombay & Southampton ". Postal marks include a very fine red oval "INDIA" on the front as well as a fine black London handstruck "2" charge-mark, with an "UMBALLA/FREE" oval mark on the reverse. The letter was re-posted from St. John's to the men's mother in Ireland, with a new address on the reverse, a very fine "ST. JOHN/N.B" c.d.s. across the join, and the Transatlantic "1/2" charge. Exceptional example of a doubly Transatlantic Soldier's letter showing the contrast of the Concession rate (2d unpaid all the way from India to Canada) and the 1s-2d rate to cross the Atlantic.
