None of us likes to dwell upon our mortality, but it is a simple fact that in most cases our Stamp and Postal History collections will outlive us. It is easy to make sure that a collection will not be wasted and carelessly dispersed... Five minutes of planning now could save your family great heartache and thousands of pounds at a time when you would least want them to suffer. If you have not made a will, please contact a Solicitor at once. If you have already made one, or are about to do so, it is very easy to add separate instructions regarding your Collections.
SPECIALIST PHILATELIC ADVICE FOR EXECUTORS.
The best thing that you can do for your family - who may well know very little about your collection, its value, or stamp auctions in general - is to name a trusted Specialist Philatelist to act in parallel with your will's general executors in relation to your Collections.
In this way you will know that the right decisions will be made for your beneficiaries.
Cavendish Philatelic Auctions is a long-established and reputable Limited Company which has remained entirely independent for two generations and intends to remain so for many generations to come. One of the Directors would be willing to act as specialist adviser if desired.
TECHNICAL WORDING.
The following wording is suggested for Wills, Codicils or Separate Letters of Instruction to Executors (the latter always to be kept together with the Will and any copies):
"It is my wish that Cavendish Philatelic Auctions Limited of 153-7 London Road, Derby, DE1 2SY, England shall be consulted by my executor/executrix/executors/trustee/trustees (as the case may be) in connection with all aspects of my philatelic Collection(s)". [A further sentence or two giving your reasons for this can also be added at this point.]
A dated copy of these instructions should be sent to Cavendish at the time that they are drawn up, as an additional safeguard. Also we recommend that special Executor labels should be stuck in each album. (Labels available on request). These read:
IN THE EVENT OF MY DEATH, PLEASE CONTACT CAVENDISH PHILATELIC ACTIONS LTD., Cavendish House, 153-7 London Road, Derby, DE1 2SY, England Tel: (01332) 346753
IN ACCORDANCE WITH MY WILL/INSTRUCTIONS

PROCEDURES.
The standard procedures after a Collector's demise should include the immediate assessment of the Collection's probate value (even when there are no death duties payable). Cavendish can arrange for the transport, insurance, safe custody and Probate Valuation of Collections of any size pending the grant of probate, and draw up proposals for their subsequent insurance and/or sale.
When Collections are to be sold:
- Advice is given to the executors/beneficiaries regarding the best approach to marketing the Collections. Very large holdings and duplicated sections should not be auctioned too rapidly otherwise the returns achieved may be unnecessarily reduced. Cavendish's marketing experience will ensure that the correct strategy is selected.
- The well-advertised, expertly described and carefully lotted Auction of the Collections is arranged. Cavendish ensures that catalogues are tailor-made so that their action results are maximised.
- Lots are carefully described, material is not 'bulked' together, numerous illustrations are included, specialised advertising is undertaken (worldwide when necessary), auction venues and/or viewing in London and other cities can be arranged upon request, and usually over 100 people attend the actual auction itself. Cavendish's clientele is truly International. Results speak for themselves.
- Full settlement, with a detailed lot-by-lot analysis, is provided within a specified number of weeks after the auction. Funds can be distributed direct to beneficiaries, to charities or to trustees anywhere in the world.
