    LANCASHIRE - MANCHESTER - EXPERIMENTAL CANCELLATION - VERY RARE "FRENCH MACHINE" DUPLEX; 17 Nov. 1857 E with 1d Red 'Stars' tied by a mainly v. fine strike of the extremely rare "MANCHESTER/498" "French Machine" Sideways Duplex with "R" code (the less rare Liverpool example on cover in the 'Ian Little' collection sold in Cavendish's 26 Sept. 1997 auction, lot 1854, for £2,185), which was only in use for 12 days, and of which only a handful on or off cover are known. We have only seen 4 examples - 2 on piece - in 30+ years. The rarest of all Duplexes?
