    NEW ZEALAND MAILS - VERY EARLY LETTER FROM A PIONEER SETTLER; 7 Dec. 1840 E to London endorsed 'New Zealand 7th December 1840' on the address panel and 'T.M.Partridge Port Nicholson/6 Decr 1840' at right. Further endorsed 'Per Morley/via Sydney' where apparently carried privately and rated '3'(d) ship letter rate and '1/4'(d) apparently double rate incoming ship letter. The writer, Thomas M Partridge had a store in Port Nicholson that burnt down, was awarded a one-acre plot in Manners Street and a member of the Provisional Constitution meeting chaired by Colonel Wakefield. Other than missionary mail, one of the earliest posted articles from New Zealand.
