    Lot 3019

THE "STATE OF THE SEVEN UNITED ISLANDS", 1800-1802 - UNIQUE(?) COVER - CORFU TO VENICE; Attractive 22 June 1800 EL (folds to display dated internal heading alongside the address-panel; some light staining, mainly internal) in Greek sent from Corfu to Venice (the Paolo Filli correspondence; addressed to him as the Consul of the Emperor of all the Russias) by private means with a red wax seal on the reverse. Zaphiriou (1987; pp. 93 et al.) recorded no covers at all from the 1798-1800 Russo-Ottoman influence nor from the brief "State of the Seven United Islands" Period (21 March 1800 to 28 August 1802) during which the islands were nominally under Ottoman suzerainty. He stated that any cover that might be found of the Oct. 1798 to Aug. 1802 period (such as this lot) would be "not only a prize addition to Septinsular [Ionian Islands] postal history, but also a desirable object of great rarity for collectors specialising in this field". Need one say more? Probably the only recorded 1798-1802 Ionian Islands cover in private hands.

    G.M. Vlachos - Ionian Islands, Lot 3019
