Cavendish December 2018 Auction Realisations & Future Auctions

Several specialised collections were auctioned at Cavendish House in Derby on December 5 & 6 with excellent results being achieved. Featuring fine material which has not been on the market in recent years, bidding was fierce and active in the packed room, on the telephones and on-line. We were also pleased to see Ken Baker take to the rostrum once again to celebrate 50 years as an auctioneer. Greg Spring presented Ken with a 'Golden' gavel to mark the occassion and thank him for his continuing hard work.

The sale attracted a record number of collectors on the Internet using easyLiveAuction.com, from China and India in particular, and many specialist collectors bid in person or via our agents Nick Martin and Trevor Chinery. There was much interest from Europe too, with strong book bids via Philasearch and our own website.

Due to the intense battles, many items sold for much more than estimate, in particular the unique Plate 1 2d Blue on cover with fine red London scalloped "Sun" cds dated 1841 (lot 1199) which sold for £8000, and an 1865 unused 8a Carmine with an inverted watermark (lot 638) attaining a hammer price of £3800.

Our next auctions will be held on 27 & 28 February 2019 with viewing at Spring Stampex in London (Stand 95). Consignments end on January 2, so hurry if you would like to start the New Year with your own success story. These auctions will feature:

  • The John Sussex RDP collection of Devon postal history.
  • The Sandy Mackie FCPS collection of Canada Admiral plating.
  • Tonga Tin Can mail.
  • Superb G.B. and foreign stamps, including exceptional British Commonwealth.
  • Fine 19th & 20th century postal history.
  • Public viewing at Spring Stampex in London (see us at Stand 95).
